The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Victoria’s Telehealth Specialist service is committed to helping rural Victorians receive high quality, specialist health services within their own communities. The Flying Doctor Telehealth (FDT) is presenting a educational webinar series aimed at educating and supporting clinicians working with rural and remote populations. Designed in a ‘Lunch and Learn’ format, FDT is producing this series to improve knowledge for service provision in limited resource settings and support GPs with identifying referral triggers. Clinicians in rural communities can often work alone, or have reduced support, and may not always have ready access to the most up to date information.
The first webinars in this series are Endocrinology focused, with RFDS Victoria expanding the presentations to other FDT specialist services in the future, so make sure you keep an eye out for future communications. Specialist Dr Kavita Kumareswaran, Endocrinologist, Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute
- Dr Kavita Kumareswaran undertook specialist training in New Zealand and the UK, obtaining her FRACP in 2012. She completed a PhD in Medicine at the University of Cambridge in 2012. Dr Kumareswaran’s research focused on testing a closed loop system of insulin delivery in patients with type 1 diabetes and her clinical practice includes general endocrinology and diabetes, with a special interest in type 1 diabetes, insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring. Kavita is a visiting endocrinologist at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne, and practices privately in Cabrini Malvern, the Baker Institute Prahran and suites in the CBD. She has been carrying out telehealth consultations with regional Victoria and NSW, facilitated by RFDS, for several years now. She is happy to see new patients and is also available to GPs for phone advice.

The landscape of diabetes management is changing rapidly. In addition to new medications, patients are increasingly using technology to assist with monitoring their diabetes. This includes the use of “smart” glucometers, various diabetes apps, and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices. The majority of patients with type 1 diabetes still use multiple daily injections of insulin, however, insulin pump use is increasing. This technology is advancing rapidly, with patients now having the option of automated insulin delivery using an insulin pump combined with CGM, also known as a closed-loop. This webinar will provide an update on these topics.
